Use a high-temp gasket at the cylinder head flange. The downpipe connection is one-piece, so there's no mid-pipe joint to seal. A quality header gasket is all you need on the hot side.
Can I paint or ceramic coat this?
Stainless steel can be coated with high-temp ceramic. Surface should be clean and free of oils before application. If you want raw stainless finish, no prep required — it'll develop a natural patina under heat.
