Do I need any special tools to remove the old sensor?
An O2 sensor socket (cheap, widely available) or a wrench makes removal easier, but the sensor unscrews by hand if you let the engine cool first. Anti-seize lubricant helps future removal.
What if the sensor won't thread in smoothly?
Check that the threaded bung in your manifold isn't clogged with carbon. Run a soft wire through it or use a gasket scraper. Never force the sensor; it should thread cleanly into the factory bore.
